(Special Exhibition) Jeollanam-do in 1919: Korea Independence Movement
The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage and Mokpo City co-host a special exhibition, “Jeollanam-do in 1919: Korea Independence Movement, Long Live Korean Independence!”. This exhibition is designed to re-examine the March 1st Independence Movement and Anti-Japanese Movement carried out by people in the Jeollanam-do Province and the wounds created by the invasion of maritime sovereignty under the Japanese imperialism. The year 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement. “Mansae !”, desperate cry for national independence rang out on March 1, 1919, brought the Korean people all together. In Jeolla-do Province, people shouted “Mansae !” despite the suppression of Japan’s imperialism. The March 1st Independence Movement reminded us of the meaning of freedom, liberation, and world peace that were stolen by Japanese imperialists, and laid the foundation for establishing Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. This special exhibition aims to capture the desperate cry for the nation’s independence in the past, 100 years ago, as echoes resonating in our hearts now, 100 years later. We hope that this serves as an opportunity to pay tribute to our painful history.
